Eponine from "Les Miserables"
(portrayed by Samantha Barks)

 Action-packed movies are a favorite of mine, and what I really admire about these characters is their willingness to defend themselves and/or others during a battle.

"Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends."
~ John 15:13

Taking martial arts (Taekwondo) has helped me realize even more the responsibility that I have to protect those around me. I might not have the strength of the Bible judge Samson, or the agility of a ninja, but I have a "braveheart" through Christ who strengthens me. {Philippians 4:16}

With more talk about tighter gun control, our liberty to defend ourselves with weapons (such as guns) is being taken away. Criminals don't ever obey the law, so what's going to stop them from invading your home with guns unless you have a way to defend yourself and others? Because I sure bet that a baseball bat (or martial arts) won't do you much good when they start pulling the trigger.

As Francis Schaeffer once said,

"The Bible is clear here: I am to love my neighbor as myself, in the manner needed, in a practical way, in the midst of the fallen world, at my particular point of history. This is why I am not a pacifist. Pacifism in the poor world in which we live-this lost world-means that we desert the people who need our greatest help. What if you come upon a big, burly man beating a tiny tot to death and plead with him to stop. Suppose he refuses? What does love mean now? Love means that I stop him in any way I can, including hitting him. To me this is not only necessary for humanitarian reasons: it is loyalty to Christ's commands concerning Christian love in a fallen world. What about the little girl? If I desert her to the bully, I have deserted the true meaning of Christian love-responsibility to my neighbor."

I fight to preserve life from being unjustly taken. This is what Christians should be doing at abortion clinics as well as "gun-free" zones.

Thoughts anyone? Whose with me?!

I don't think that I could shout a loud enough "amen", Nela my sister. This is my heart exactly. Well said.

I am SOO with you! It bugs me how the media is brainwashing this country to be afraid of guns, because of the {yes tragic} death of 20kids, they're wanting to take all our guns away, yet they completely endorse abortion? Its just sick!
Loved this post! And I gotta say, Lady Eowyn is my absolute favorite female fictional heroine ^_^

YES Nela! I couldn't agree with you more. The whole "take away guns and there will be more peace" idea makes me sick.

"I fight to preserve life from being unjustly taken. This is what Christians should be doing at abortion clinics as well as "gun-free" zones." amen amen amen!

This ENTIRE post is perfectly my thoughts! I am proudly not a pacifist and I love how balanced you are in that issue!

Yes, it is very ironic that the same people who say that dismembering a baby alive is perfectly legal- however, they are committed to stopping senseless violence.
It is worse to think that they are going to do so by "mental health screenings," and not allowing unstable people to buy guns. How is someone who believes that dismembering a live baby should be legal going to decide what is stable mental health?

I was researching this issue this morning and came across a statement a man made. He said the Founding Fathers would be in favor of a ban on assault weapons- they didn't want us to have weapons of mass destruction, did they? He seemed to think they mostly wanted guns for occasional shooting practice.
I argue they did want America heavily armed, and not just for skeet. To quote a fellow Christian who wrote about this, he said

"The American founders were not protecting Americans' right to hunt.
They were not protecting Americans' right to protect themselves against would-be rapists and home invaders.
They were protecting Americans' right to protect Americans' rights.
The Second Amendment puts a wall of lead between the American people and a foe far more dangerous than any dark shape in a back alley.
The dangers of a tyrannical government unchecked by an armed populace are illustrated potently by each government-led genocide, each purge, each Auschwitz and every Siberia."

You can read more of his at allauthority.blogspot.com

He is so right, as are you. America's Founders wanted us armed-for a reason.

Very true, Miss Nela. I shall join you in your thoughts on this issue wholeheartedly...
{And most of those heroines I can relate with... something about their bravery inspires me. ;)}

Blessings,

I've never held a special love for Padme or Susan, but amen to the rest. =)

This is a super interesting and thought-provoking post, Nela. I've talked to several people who are horrified that I would consider carrying a firearm for self-defense and the defense of others, but I have never felt any doubt as to my responsibility in that area. Thanks for being so bold with your thoughts, dear. =)

I pray that America will not end up like South Africa, where the lawless govern with a unstoppable urge for power and the individual stand alone, being attacked physically (look at our crime stats, btw, the official stats are being 'screened' to look better) and emotionally (just look at the typical news items in SA, crime, murder, corruption, etc). I am glad to see so many of you standing for conservative rights! STand strong in Christ! Henk

I think it's great that there are girls who believe that self-defense a necessity, not a luxury.
